Waiting

All nightplanets glow likecat’s eyes, the moon an orangelava lamp holding upa black sky.

If I liestaring over rooftopswhile the jumbos glidelike messages, and you are on the other sidecalling my name.

All nightI listen for your footsteps,a rustle in a hedgerowa face across a crowded bara whisper to say whoand where you are.

All nightI’m counting empty moonbeamsreaching for you in my sleephearing the numbersof a grey dawn:the numbers of infinity.

I would lieif I said I knewthe answers, held the key, could erase the picture in a mirror,a hand across a tablea kiss beside a river.

All nightwhile the planets glowlike cat’s eyesthe moon an orange lava lampall night, under a black sky,I wait.
