Nocturnal

It rained in the night

the swish swash sound of water

washing through my dreams

drowning strangers in my head

places I have never seen &

songs that hum through me.

My old dog snores & stretches

chasing squirrels in her sleep,

a double rainbow shivers in

the morning light,

yes it rained in the night

washed away the sadness

staunched my grief

gave me mellow yellow

landscapes, one more day

of breathing in & out

waiting for tomorrow.

Lights out

Light’s out

eyes closed

I’m counting constellations

touching solar systems

Sun rise

slow glow

earth twirls through

daily blaze & we

are lost in minutae.

Touch hands

lock hearts

burn neural pathways

hum a melody

familiar in its rise ‘n fall

without within, connection

spins

Dusk falls

night hovers

the life we thought we

held floats away

lost on winter stream

torrent fast ‘n teaming.

Equinox

Kestrel stretches wings

mile high spins: sky open, empty

contrails fading into light

Swallow’s murmurate on

telegraph wire counting

fledglings checking route maps;

heading south to sunshine.

We the ones they leave

behind, shorter nights

earth twirls unending.

Rain came while I slept

tidal wave down drain pipe

silencing the dawn chorus.

Light has morphed from

gold to grey another summer

runs from us.

We are old / new: old/ new:

changeable like the weather

low pressure presses, hearts  quake.

Trees moan & sway

their constant flow

makes my head ache,

& I’ve slept a million lives

through endless seas;

searched for you as you

have me, walked a lifetime

in these shoes

with nothing solid

underneath

yet gravity binds us.
