Electra

The women flutter

when you pass

they preen like

pretty birds

& you oblivious

to the dip ’n sway

smile & stride

on by.

A daughter who adored

a wife with many needs:

you walked lightly

on this earth

oblivious to us all

the air, your special dream.

A bird without a soul

hidden by the years

a man with no idea

of the pain you brought

to me.

You soared above us all

at supersonic speed

you lived & died

with no regard

no guilt, no empathy.

I follow you through sleep

an Electra with her sword

I cannot see your face

but love’s the strangest thing.

It has no bonds, no chains

you’re buried in my heart

each day you breathe

through me.

Frost

Diamonds burn the lawn

crescent moon fades

a faint red frieze bleeds the sky.

I never knew what ‘old’ would feel

heart still hosts its beat, the breath

frosty puffs in time.

Gone are days of excess joy

& all the pain has settled

to a dull ache

like distant thunder

so talk to me of quantum leaps

a universe that folds its unknown stars:

I watch the waves on broken shore

they mesmerize the tiny hum

of unborn life.

Here a speck of floating dust

waits for darkness to consume,

leaving diamonds on the lawn

a planted tree, a wistful sigh

of who was ‘me’.

Winter

Touch me with your smile

a look, a glitter in your eye

to soothe these winter nights

to warm a dying fire.

Lead me with a song to

a meadow in the spring

where the willow bends her head

& the stream is running clear

Tell me that you love me

without a single word

for words can lead astray

& words are only heard.

Touch me with your smile

laughter glitters brighter than

these evening stars, take a walk

beneath Orion’s belt

& play a mean guitar

yes play that mean guitar.
